Shopify: Online store 1.0 vs 2.0

We’ve been accustomed to the presence of Shopify as one of the biggest e-commerce sites.

With its easy to access set up and customizable building of online stores, Shopify had become one of the favorites of merchants who wanted their start ups to bloom.

Shopify intends to make this experience even better, by introducing us to Online Store 2.0- an enhanced version of shopify with more advanced features and better customization for your stores. This version intends to migrate from the old Theme-kit to Shopify Cli for it’s whole brand new set of theme selections.

Online store 2.0 is a set of features and feature improvements that make themes and theme apps easier to build, more flexible and more maintainable. It is a set of features that rely on JSON templates. It enables you to migrate your theme to add support for these features by converting a Liquid template into JSON template, and moving any required Liquid code or HTML into sections that you can include in the new JSON template.

Online store 2.0 marks an end-to-end modernization of how themes are built at Shopify. With sections on every page, app powered blocks, flexible data storage and robust

developer tools, the process of building a theme on Shopify is easier than ever before. The protractibility offered to app developers means more opportunity to build integrations for merchants and surface your solution directly in the online store.

The most notable feature about this upgrade would be Shopify-CLI.

Shopify CLI helps you build shopify themes and apps. It quickly generates Node.js apps, ruby on rails app, app extensions and shopify themes. It automates many common development tasks.

Themes that use this new architecture can add support for app blocks built with theme app extensions, an app development framework that lets you add an app to a theme, or update an app without altering a merchant’s theme code. Code is packaged in modular app blocks that merchants can control using the shopify theme editor. When it is uninstalled by a merchant, the app code is removed with it.

Advancements on the basis of performance includes a raise from 72% to a solid 96% including a reduction in the first contentful paint from 3.1 seconds to 2.0 seconds.

Further on the new Online store 2.0 can be treated as ‘A change for the user’ as it has included a lot more enhancement in it’s customization features that a user can avail without having to go into the code, for instance in Store 1.0 the editor did not have much options to edit (in reference to image text overlay) on the images, sections, etc without the developers, but on the other hand, in Store 2.0, numerous changes have been introduced like accessing the blog, more customizations like accent color selection, alignment management for texts, having full control over a created sections enabling them to move the section around anywhere throughout the website, making it all the more interesting and easy for the user.

In conclusion, These enhancements within the customization section of Shopify and their focus on user’s experience is what really stood out for Online Store 2.0.
